Back in March, I had the good fortune of celebrating my 25th anniversary working for STS Technical Services’ engineering department. This is an accomplishment that I am very proud of.
I started in 1990 as a designer and, over the years, gained valuable experience dealing with different types of companies and people. Twenty-five years later and I now find myself managing that very same department.
Anniversaries of all types are special and should be celebrated and reflected upon, whether they are professional or personal. In my case, I have been thinking back over the years to all of the ups and downs, all of the wonderful people I have met and worked with and all of the different projects I’ve had a hand in during my career.
Throughout it all, one question I keep asking myself is “What has kept me coming back to STS Technical Services year after year?” The answer to that question has many layers but it basically boils down to this… I keep coming back to STS because they keep inviting me back. I’ve always enjoyed the company’s atmosphere and culture, and I love being involved in work that varies from project to project. All of these things have kept the job both challenging and exciting for me.
If you find yourself in a job that you can’t picture doing for the long term, do yourself a favor and look for a new one that will. And if you’re a manager or leader in your company, please celebrate your employees’ anniversaries and help foster an environment that promotes career longevity. This will help bring stability to your organization, and your employees will be able to stand the test of time.
