There is one important thing you’ll learn as you grow and mature. No one can read your mind. As we get older, we learn that communication is an absolute necessity in almost every facet of our lives. We must communicate in our romantic relationships, familial relationships and platonic relationships. One thing we are all guilty of at one point or another is having a lack of communication. We hope those around us can read our subliminal signals well enough to figure out what we want or need.
To get what we want in life, we must ask for it. If there’s someone you like, ask them on a date. If there’s something specific you want for dinner, ask for it. These are both common examples of asking for what you want. One thing we tend to forget about, though, is asking for what we want in our career. We can be afraid of losing our jobs, we can be afraid of the attention and we can even be afraid of rejection; the reasons are endless. But one thing remains true. People cannot read our minds.
In order to have the most fulfilling and rewarding career, in order to get what we want, we must ask for it. We must ask for the promotion we want. We must ask for the raise we want. We can’t be afraid of the word “no.” We cannot let the fear of striking out keep us from playing the game. So, as Nike once said, “Just do it,” or in other words, just ask.
